A Walk in a Nursery - Aunty Yok
Few things can rival a relaxing afternoon visiting a nursery and enjoying all the colours and fragrances there.
Water hyssop, Bacopa sp., gives tiny beautiful blooms.
A light brush through the leaves with your hand and you can enjoy a very refreshing fragrance.
Water hyssop, Bacopa sp., grows in marsh and hence can be a good addition to an aquarium or water feature.
Begonia is a genus with loads of different shapes, sizes, and colours.
Being under storey plants, Begonia sp. thrives with shading and high humidity.
Brazilian bachelor's button, Centratherum punctatum, is easy to grow and has very visible purple flowers that can be quite an attraction to bees and butterflies.
Golden dewdrop, Duranta erecta, flowers very regularly and is a bee and butterfly magnet.
Golden dewdrops have varieties of flowers with shades, from dark purple to white.
Even the white flower variety of golden dewdrop is pretty.
Do you know why it is called golden dewdrop?
The reason is that they bear golden fruits in dewdrop shape. We did not get the photo of the dewdrop fruits but you can search the Internet for photos.
Elaeocarpus sp. bears very fluffy looking flowers.
I had seen larger Elaeocarpus trees than these carried by this nursery but I've never seen one flowering as many as these.
Eugenia sp. also has fluffy flowers but these are tiny flowers.
One of the characteristics I love about Eugenia is that the leaves will start off with reddish and turn green as they mature. The leaves are also fragrant if you crush them.
Common fig, Ficus carica, is a fruit tree recorded in the Bible and Qur'an.
The fruit has religious significance and is said to be nutritious and carries many medicinal properties
This common fig variety Aunty Yok carries is Black Jack. Some other common varieties you can easily find in the market are Brown Turkey, Panache, and Taiwan Golden Fig.
Cotton, Gossypium sp., is one of the unexpected find here.
White hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, with a large bloom.
Easy to grow and care, hibiscus adds colours to your garden.
Pink hibiscus.
Mosaic flowers, Ludwigia sedioides, generally floats on water.
The beautiful layout of the leaves of mosaic flower makes this a wonderful plant to decorate water features.
Mint, Mentha sp., grows quite easily here and makes very wonderful relaxing tea. All you have to do is just to steep the leaves, fresh or dried, in boiling water.
Sadly, I have no ID for this plant. It has wonderful flowers.
Lemon basil, Ocimum citriodora, has a very nice lemony fragrance.
The flower top of lemon basil serves as a bee and butterfly attractant. To keep the plant growing strong, you can trim off the flower tops before they bloom and fertilize the plants regularly.
Tibouchina sp. has beautiful bright purple blooms. They are quite closely related with our own senduduk, Melastoma malabathricum.
Wrightia sp. has small white or orangey flowers with fragrance.
